She's Home!

Not a happy bunny

Photobucket

I know we are not out of the woods yet but, Kiri's home. It's very sad to see her but she's an old lady who's been through a big Op. I suppose it's amazing that she was able to walk out of the surgery less than 24 hrs after such an ordeal. With her MMM she's been through a lot earlier in her life, now she's put her self through a hell of a lot more. (Not to mention what she's put us through the last few days!

Photobucket

The contents of Kiri's stomach! Bit of a football, bit of those large tennis balls and god knows what that is in the middle but it's hard and jagged! Placed my phone next to them so you can see how big they are, what ever possessed her eh!

Kiri Update

Kiri's been out and had a wee. They are going to try her with some food shortly. If she keeps it down she can come home. :)))) I think Louis' missing her as much as we are....

Plastic? No I'm not suprised!

We got up this morning to a very poorly Kiri Mctavish. She had been vomiting a lot in the night, was very lethargic and and Wouldn't even eat fish.
Steve took her to the vets and they did blood tests and x.rays. The bloods results were good but the x.rays gave us the answers we needed. There was a large foreign object in her stomach. There were simply no choices, she had to have an operation to remove it, ASAP. The vet said she wished she wasn't 12 years old and facing this operation, but at least the bloods had proved her to be a healthy 12, and as we know complications can occur at any age!
The operation itself was a success and Kiri has now apparently come round, they found 2 large bits of plastic in her stomach! I won't be able to relax till she's safely home with us now.
I guess if this was going to happen to any of our dogs it would be her....she's always been a mobile litter bin!
Must say I wasn't sure how to take the vets statement of, "now before we proceed, here's the shocking news...it will cost around £600." What would she have done if I'd said I can't afford that? Which I can't, £600 is only a quid or two short of a months wages for me...thank God for Credit Cards! But having already said that if left, the object would probably have passed into the gut, and that would have been a disaster. So what else could we do? But if we genuinely could not afford it, would they not operate, would they just leave her or would they have suggested she be PTS? Doesn't bear thinking about but I can't help but ponder! Surely the first consideration is the animal, can't finances be sorted later? Especially when you've been a client at a practice for about 20 years and never had any financial problems with them. Sadly it feels more like a business than an organisation to care for animals these days.....

More Wet Walks!!

But sadly no one came home clean like they did from the lake!!!

Bad Day

Kiri was flat last night and she's not well again today. It's the first time in her 12years that she's left a meal; She even ate when she had a "Payo" a couple of years ago so this concerns me greatly. The vet said her temperature, heart, chest etc are all Ok. ...but she's just so lethargic and she didn't even want to come to the field with Kai this afternoon, this is just not like her.
I know at 12 years old she's a good age for a German Shepherd, but up to last night she was doing so well. We even went to the lake at Cwm Dulyn on Sunday and she was full of beans.
Here's hoping it's one of those days and tomorrow will be better...

Misty

Misty is a 4 year old white long coated GSD bitch, she has just had a litter and is now sadly unwanted by her owners. She is a lovely, friendly, affectionate girl, who loves people and children but doesn't like "yappy" small dogs or cats. Misty is Teddy pup's mum!

Still No End In Sight....

Louis' weight today was 29.6kg which is a great improvement, (at his lowest he's been 28.15kg) and to be honest another couple of kg and he'd be around his normal weight. There is an obvious improvement to the eye but things are sadly also obviously still not right inside.
He's had another months course of Metronidazole and she's concerned about the colour of his stools; (it has a green tinge to it) it could be that somehow blood cells are breaking down in the gut. I've googled it and had a good look through, Giardia always seems to be coming up, Louis tested clear for it but the fact that it may not always be detected in stool samples concerns me. Still the treatment for this as well as the campylobacter is Metronidazole so hopefully if there is a problem with this parasite it can now be controlled. As I often say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing so I'll leave the diagnosis to the vets and trust the treatment to be correct!
I think we all feel this will be ongoing for a while yet...
