After the first 48 hrs are over we breath a sigh of relief and feel that the pups are now doing well. The next scary time is weaning, where further abnormalities could come to light. Just to keep us on the ball the females now start to dig up their bedding. It's believed to be a natural response to normal moderate pain as the uterus contracts. Nature tells Siska to do it, but in the process puppies gets pushed about and buried under bedding with the risk of suffocation. I guess that's why the old school breeders only ever used newspaper, but of course that came with problems too. Puppies often got cold and died, and they struggled to get traction to go around the box and feed. Having the camera on during the day and sleeping in the same room as the litter gives me as much of a safety net as possible. These guys are precious and it's my responsibility to help Siska as much as I can now.
