Day One Of Recovery

In himself Loki looks bright and cheerful but his mobility is letting him down. Now all four legs are affected and he can't walk unaided. Saying that we tried a body belt but actually he seem to find it easier with just one person guiding him by his collar. This morning after warning Ian to be positive and happy around Loki I was the one who burst into tears. I really don't think that will help him,  I'm trying my best to make everything a fun experience. If we are stressed then he will become stressed and that's the last thing he needs. You can see from the bottom photo how difficult it is for him to walk when all four feet turn like this and his legs buckle beneath him. The vet says we should try and keep him moving, 10 mins four times a day - at the moment 10 steps is too far without a break, but we will persevere. The massaging definitely helps and Steve is doing an excellent job at it. Hopefully in a weeks time we will see a huge improvement. Whether we ever have normality again or not is just beyond my thinking right now, but quality of life is paramount ... hopefully we can look ahead and accept a new normal for Loki.

This Is Heartbreaking

Loki's mobility is no better. He was out of the crate when I got up this morning, lying behind the door. He had a drink but can't walk unaided at all, he hasn't peed since he came back which concerns me. He seems to try to cock his leg, realises he can't then gives up on the idea. I added the meds to white fish for breakfast but he wouldn't eat it, sardines in tomato sauce on top did the trick. I guess it's early days, but it's heartbreaking to see him. A little comfort is someone who had a similar incident with a foster dog messaged me, it took 4 or 5 days for the dog to get back on his feet and then they were able to manage him with pain relief. 

It's just so hard to get your head around it, we had no idea that he had a problem. He showed no signs of pain, no signs of weakness, he was seemingly a fit health happy dog. Even 24 hrs ago there was nothing to see. Now he can't even take a step without falling over. 

Trying to stay positive is hard, but for Loki I have too. The tears are behind closed doors only. In Loki's company we are happy and supportive, going down to tickle his belly when he falls over rather than showing upset is far better for him. His tail was going ten to the dozen as I hand fed him the last morsels of his breakfast. Hand feeding is a no no here, but when someone is ill rules go out of the window. 

I'm not sure where to put him now, it would be unfair for him to be with the pack, but Nico is in the next room, so I guess it's kitchen or bedroom. Of course to make matters worse Kaiah is in season and Orin is getting ideas above his station ... I just hope Loki will have improved by the time the need separating. 

We'll get through it, we have to! 

Loki's Diagnosis

It's been one of the shittiest days. First thing this morning Loki was fine, by about 10.15am something wasn't quite right. He was a tad uncoordinated but still got up in a flash as I got up. I noticed he was crossing his back legs and shortly after that started stumbling on his front. I rang the vet and we took him straight over. By the time we got there he was worse, swaying, knuckling and falling over. He was examined and taken in for Xrays where they found her had server spondylosis, quite unusual in a dog so young. We've had a look at the x.rays and can see the abnormality. Loki started his pain meds but he had deteriorated further by the time we were picking him up. Taking into account that he had had anaesthetic a few hours earlier I still found it shocking that by the time we were picking him up that he couldn't walk without the aid of two of us. Loki was running on the mountain yesterday ... I can't believe what he looks like tonight, I can only hope for improvement over the weekend.

 Loki is currently at the vets. This morning he lost mobility in one front and one back leg. He didn't seem in any pain at all, but is uncoordinated and kept falling over. It's all very odd as you would expect the issues to be on the same side. I'm ringing the vet back after 2pm ... I'm worried sick about the outcome. 

It Was Colder Than I Expected

I was horrified when he ran over to a young lad walking a collie, I called him and called him and ended up spouting profanities at him. As it happened the young lad and dog didn't care and I could see him stroking Ross (which may not help me in the future)  .. but I care and I was so annoyed with him. What made it worse was that when he decided to come back he realised he'd lost his kong and would not come back without it .. when he eventually found it he took it back to the kid. I found myself thinking "Please don't throw it, please don't throw it.... " Had he we could have been there forever. I know Ross has a super character, but it really is not on. I ask very little of them, but a recall is paramount. Why would he now have got it in his head to go up to people? He never used to bother and he could get himself and me in trouble if he carries on. 

Great fun on part two of walk three. 

Little Siska can now do about 25 mins which is great, it's just watching she doesn't get run over by her mad brother and mother now.

What To Do In The Heat?

Of course Ross had almost emptied it before anyone had a go. Steve had to hang onto him so Orin and Siska had a chance to paddle.
